Agroecology for Food Security: Gilbert Naife’s Story

After losing 95% of his crops to the 2024 drought, Mumbwa farmer Gilbert Naife faced an uncertain 2025 farming season with no funds for fertilisers and seeds. Through FIAN Zambia’s agroecology training, he learnt to make Bokashi, an organic fertiliser, and decided to test it on his farm.

By March 2025, his three hectares of maize fields were thriving, intercropped with nutritious vegetables like pumpkins and amaranth. Gilbert expects to harvest 120 bags of maize, ensuring food and nutrition security for his family—all without synthetic fertilisers.

Agroecology works! It builds resilience, supports nutrition, and empowers farmers.
